Pomona, NY – It took a five-run ninth for the Ottawa Titans (10-6) to put away the New York Boulders with a 12-8 victory in game one of their three-game series at Clover Stadium on Tuesday night.
Jackie Urbaez and Rodrigo Orozco got aboard to lead off the ball game off Boulders starter Alex Mack (ND, 1-0) for AJ Wright. With runners on the corners and no one out, Mack attempted to pick-off Orozco at first, but threw the ball into foul territory, plating the first run.
The Titans continued to threaten in the first, putting runners on first and second for Brendon Dadson. The Bowmanville native delivered a three-run shot over the wall in right to extend the lead to 4-0 before Tyler Jandron (ND, 2-0) took to the hill.
After Tucker Nathans homered in the first, Max Smith found himself aboard for Jake Mackenzie with no one out in the second. Mackenzie scorched a Jandron offering to deep left-centre that hit off the wall. After Smith came into score on what appeared to be a double, the umpires discussed and deemed the ball cleared the wall and credited Mackenzie with a two-run homer.
As the Titans’ bats cooled off in the middle innings, the Boulders took the opportunity to tie the score, led by Chris Kuitzer going 3-for-4 with four RBI.
With the score tied at five in the seventh, the Titans sent eight batters to the plate and converted off an RBI fielder’s choice from Jacob Sanford and Tyrus Greene’s bases-loaded walk to put the visitors ahead 7-5.
Grant Larson (win, 2-0) came on for his first full inning of work in the eighth and the Boulders got to the lefty, plating three runs to take an 8-7 lead.
The Boulders went to the bullpen for the ninth for their closer Leo Pineda (loss, 1-2), who was greeted with two quick hits from Jacob Sanford and Brendon Dadson. The Titans’ offence found another gear, scoring five runs on four hits off Pineda to take a 12-8 lead, including a two-run shot from Jackie Urbaez.
Kevin Escorcia locked down the win for his fifth save of the season to preserve the team’s tenth victory of the season.
The Ottawa Titans continue their three-game series against the New York Boulders on Wednesday morning in Pomona, New York. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. from Clover Stadium. The Titans return home on Friday, June 10 at 6:30 to take on the Empire State Greys.
