Ottawa, ON – Up 2-0 after two, the Ottawa Titans (29-17) surrendered the final ten runs of the ballgame, dropping a 10-2 final to the New Jersey Jackals on Wednesday night.
Kenny Williams (loss, 0-1) took to the hill in the middle game of the series, retiring the first three he saw in the first. The Titans got a leadoff double to left from Jackie Urbaez to kick off the bottom half against Angelo Baez (win, 3-2).
Jacob Talamante grounded out to first, moving Urbaez over to third as Jake Sanford stepped to the plate with one out. Sanford poked a Baez offering into left, putting the Titans in front.
The Titans added to the lead in the second, as Jason Dicochea ripped a triple to left field to lead off the frame. Tyrus Greene made it a 2-0 game, cashing in Dicochea with a sac fly.
After Jackals loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third, Dalton Combs tied the game with a base hit off Williams to left, plating Austin Markmann and Joe Simone. Following a walk to Alfredo Marte, Justin Wylie put the Jackals in front at 4-2 with a two-run single.
The four spot in the third brought an end to Williams’ night, as the southpaw allowed four runs on six hits, walking one, and striking out one in his second start of the season.
Baez used the momentum swing to silence the Titans’ offence in the middle innings, as the righty did not allow a hit from the third until the end of his outing in the fifth.
With two on and two outs in the top of the sixth, Markmann drilled a double to right, scoring a pair, making it 6-2. Markmann’s first pro hit tagged righty Kaleb Schmidt, who went five and a third out of the bullpen in the loss.
Dylan Peiffer retired the side in order in the bottom half, before the Titans got two on with no out in the seventh. Peiffer managed to get out of the early jam by setting down the next three in order.
In the ninth, Marte cashed in one by smacking a double to left off Schmidt, making it 7-2. With two on and one out, Justin Wylie greeted left-hander Matt Terrones by belting a three-run homer to left-centre to make it 10-2.
The Ottawa Titans finish their three-game series against the New Jersey Jackals tomorrow night a 6:30 p.m. Following the series finale against New Jersey, the Titans welcome the Empire State Greys for a four-game set, which includes a double header on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
