Trois-Rivières, QC -
The Ottawa Titans (42-42) dropped both ends of their doubleheader with the Trois-Rivières Aigles (33-50), falling 9-7 in game one and 2-1 in game two on Sunday afternoon, ending the road trip 1-5.
Game One - Trois-Rivières 9, Ottawa 7
After three scoreless innings, the Titans managed to strike first against right-hander Osman Gutierrez (win, 8-4) in the fourth inning. A hit, a walk, and a hit batter loaded the bases when Gutierrez beaned Evan Berkey to bring home the opening run of the contest. Next, Austin Davis doubled the lead with an RBI single up the gut before Michael Fuhrman was plunked by a fastball to bring home another run.
Making his Titans debut, Bryan Peña (ND, 3-3) was terrific until Tyler Wilbur tied the game with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, ending the line for the southpaw. Peña went four innings, allowing three runs, on four hits, walking three, and striking out three.
Daulton Montagna (loss, 0-1) was brought in and faced three batters, seeing two of them reach. Nick MacDonald entered the game with a second and third jam, seeing a double from Malik Williams score a pair to put the Aigles in front. A single from Austin Markmann brought home another run.
After allowing six runs on six hits, Joey Terdoslavich came off the bench and put the Titans within a run with a two-run single to centre in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, a sacrifice fly from Dalton Combs set up a two-run homer from Steve Brown as the Aigles went up by four.
Canadian Logan Hofmann entered to get the final three outs, but the Titans made a late run at things by getting a lead-off homer from AJ Wright to pull within three. With two on, Jake Sanford just missed a game-tying homer with a fly ball to centre that was caught on the track, bringing home one on a sacrifice fly. After putting the potential tying run aboard, Austin Davis flew out to centre to end the contest.
Game Two - Trois-Rivières 2, Ottawa 1
Both sides played another tight contest, with Damon Casetta-Stubbs (loss, 5-5) retiring the first nine in order that came to the plate in the series finale.
Tied at zeros, Tyler Wilbur's walk ended up at third with two down as Dalton Combs singled to centre to open the scoring. The single from Combs marked the first hit of the game for the home side.
Jesen Therrien (win, 1-1) navigated through a pair of tough innings, where the Titans stranded a runner at third.
AJ Wright's solo homer to open the sixth inning tied the score at one, seeing Wright record his 14th big fly of the season.
In the bottom half, a single stood aboard for Nate Scantlin who ripped a double to right, putting runners at second and third with one out. Steve Brown put the Aigles ahead for good with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Tyler Wilbur to knock Casetta-Stubbs out of the game.
The Titans' starter went five and a two-thirds, allowing two runs, on four hits, walking one, and striking out five.
